Good afternoon Grade 9s,

Today we began class by discussing arranged vs romantic marriages. We discussed some advantages and some disadvantages of each.

Following this, we wrote an argumentative paragraph in which we decided whether or not we agreed or disagreed with the fact that marriages should be arranged for all Canadians.

Once this was completed, we went into the reading of the play. We listened to act I scene i and filled in a chart telling us the options that Hermia had. Once this was completed we were done for the day.

Have a wonderful afternoon and see you on Friday.

Sincerely,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Today we began class by going over some terminology that will be useful for your knowledge before we start reading the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Following this, we looked into the characters and understood how they are organized: there are three groups – the upper class, the lower class and the supernatural beings. We then read the myth, “Hippolyta and Theseus.” We learned their purpose for the context of the play. We then edited the paragraph and handed it in.

Have a great day,

Miss Colema

Good afternoon Grade 9s,

Today we began our Shakespeare unit by answering some true or false questions about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era.

We then watched a few informative videos of the Middle Ages and Shakespearean theater. Following this, we had some facts about the times.

Lastly, we looked into Shakespearean insults and created a Shakespearean Graffiti Wall.

Next class we may have a Shakespearean battle.

Sincerely,

Miss Coleman

Good afternoon Grade 9s,

Today you had a sub.

You received a reading booklet from, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, by Sherman Alexie.

Six quotes were selected from the reading and you had to make connections to another text, yourself and the world.

This will be collected and is due next class.

Do not forget your Six word Memoirs are also due next class.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s,

Today we did our ID show and share and gave feedback to our groupmates on our public speaking and explication of what we brought.

Following this, we read another excerpt from the novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. In this excerpt, Junior focuses on his life story and where he feels he is a part of. We thus wrote six word memoirs for Junior, which were due at the end of class. We then wrote one’s for ourselves and we needed to ensure that the image we drew or selected matched the idea we wanted to get across.

Be sure to have them ready for Monday’s class. Remember, I will not be here next day.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s,

Today we began class by reading a poem entitled,”Young Offenders Facility, Yellowknife, NWT,” by Anonymous. In your groups you worked on some explication of the poem.

We followed this up, by going over the questions as a class.

We then moved on to the subject of reclamation and we utilized an old document that degraded the First Peoples Potlatch ceremony. We took a negative message and turned into something that was optimistic and hopeful.

If you did not finish your blackout poem, it is due next class.

You may use felt, marker or black pencil crayon to complete it. (Paint is also acceptable, if you have black paint.)

See you Friday,

Miss Coleman

Welcome back Grade 9s!

I hope you had a fantastic Spring Break!

Today we began by reading two poems,” Remember,” by Jacqueline Oker and, “I Lost my Talk,” by Rita Joe. Both poems discussed the hardships that children endured and the aftermath of the residential schools.

Following this, we wrote a compare and contrast thesis statement on the subject of injustice.

We were then posed with a big empathy journal question: What can I do to reconcile injustice in the world?

I hope you have a wonderful evening,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s,

Today we talked about how colonizers felt about colonization versus how First Peoples felt about it on a large sheet of paper. We then had a class discussion about it.

Following this, we read the poem, “History Lesson,” by Jeanette Armstrong and we were introduced to the literary device allusion. We then searched through the poem for different examples of allusions and tried to explain their significance.

Following this, we went over the poem together as a class.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Coleman
