Good morning Grade 9s,

Today we began class by handing in our utopia free-writes.

Then we participated in a class discussion using the four corners strategy. We were asked a question, and then we went to a corner labeled, “absolutely,” “probably,” “unlikely,” “no way.” We then had a discussion in pairs and shared with the class what our different opinions were.

Following this, we went over the outline and structure for paragraphs. We also received a list of connective phrases and transitional words.

Finally, we read from page 200 on. For homework, be sure to know proper paragraph structure and be ready for your sight passage.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s,

Today we began class by paying attention to every little detail as Christopher does in his everyday life.  Then we moved on to discuss the details that we find to be awesome by reading excerpts from the book, The Book of Even More Awesome. As a class, we then created our own list of things we find awesome.

We moved on to discuss Christopher’s dream of having a world in which nearly everyone is infected by a virus and the majority of people die. We discussed how it is shocking, but it makes sense that he might feel this way seeing as the world is constantly overwhelming for him and how at times he definitely needs a break away from everyone.

We then created our own utopic world (a world in which everything is perfect for us) in our free-write. It is due next class.

Have a wonderful day,

Miss Coleman

Good Morning Grade 9s,

Today we began class with 20 minutes to work on our scary story. Once this was completed, we completed a reading check discussing the following paradox said by Sherlock Holmes, “You see, but you do not observe.”

Remember a paradox is a statement that seems to contradict itself, but when you actually think about it, there is a deeper and more meaningful purpose to it.

As this section of reading focused on observation skills, we watched how accurate eye witness testimony may be, we tested our attention skills and then we watched an excerpt from the film, Rain Man, where Dustin Hoffman has the ability to accurately assess how many toothpicks are on the floor in a few seconds.

This led us into our discussion of Christopher’s observational skills. We re-read pages 140-142 as a class, and then had a discussion of how difficult and overwhelming it may be if we observed things the way that Christopher does. It gave us a deeper understanding of the world that Christoper lives in and how it makes sense that new places and surroundings become immensely overwhelming for him.

We then observed things in the way that Christopher might.

Lastly, we were assigned pages 158-179 for homework. If you did not finish the scary story, then it is due at the beginning of next class.

See you Wednesday,

Miss Coleman

Good morning Grade 9s,

Today in class we began with a discussion of Christopher’s fears and how the world would be to a person that has so many fears.

We then discussed what fears are and how people react when faced with a frightening situation. Our next focus was then on phobias– we discussed the 50 most common phobias and then analyzed which ones Christopher may also suffer from.

Keeping in line with frightening things, we moved on to discuss scary stories. We then wrote a scary story that needed to include the three words, gibbous, shrouded and moldering.

It was decided that next class you will receive a bit more time to finish the paragraph and that your only homework will be to read to page 158.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Coleman

Hello Grade 9s!

Welcome to a new year!  I am very excited to continue our journey through our novel unit.

To begin class, we started with a brainstorm of some of our favourite and most memorable moments over the Christmas holiday. We spent three minutes brainstorming and then 18 minutes writing a descriptive paragraph. I know most of you probably did not write very much over the break and so we need to get our creative and writing juices flowing again. Once we were finished, we spent a couple of minutes reading over and editing our writing.

Following that, it is extremely important that we recount what we have read. We worked on some review questions of the novel to get us back up to date with where we were. For homework, we had to read up to page 140.

I will see you on Thursday!

Sincerely,

Miss Coleman

Good day Grade 9s,

Today in class, we listened to Billy Collins read his poem, “The Lanyard.” We discussed why the audience found his message funny. We then discussed how children often do not understand the full extent that their parents go to to ensure their safety, protection and well-being.

After we completed the poem, we wrote a compare and contrast thesis statement on the poem and the novel.

We then read some of the myths behind constellations. Next class you will be writing your own constellation myth.

See you Thursday,

Miss Coleman

Good morning Grade 9s,

Today we began class with a reading  check.

Then we moved on to a close reading of Christopher finding out about the lies his father told. We then monitored both Christopher and his father’s reactions.

You received your rant rubric back and placed it in your portfolio.

Finally, you have pages 126-140 to read for Tuesday.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Coleman

Good morning Grade 9s,

Today we focused on assessment and re-writing of compare and contrast thesis statements. It is extremely beneficial for you to see what is being done right in a thesis statement and what can be improved upon. You received some extra notes on the compare and contrast thesis statements and then analyzed them as a class. If you did not finish them, then they were to be taken home for homework.

Please read to page 126 for next class.

See you on Friday,

Miss Coleman
